Fusarium crown and root rot, caused by two species of the fungus Fusarium sp., causes asparagus to wilt and decline. To manage these diseases, avoid planting asparagus in acidic (low pH) soil; it prefers a soil pH of 6.5 to 6.8. Also avoid high soil nitrogen levels. Maintain adequate soil moisture levels (avoid over- and under-watering).
If the disease is severe, plant new asparagus in a location where asparagus has not been grown in the last five years because these fungi survive in the soil.
