Most termite infestations are discovered when the reproductive stages (swarmers) pour out of the soil or show up inside houses. Swarmers can be found almost any time from mid-March through June in zones 6 & 7. Some ant species also swarm at this time. It is relatively easy to tell the difference between the two. Termites have straight antennae, a broad waist, and wings of equal size. Ants have bent or elbowed antennae, narrow waists, and the front wings are much longer than the hind wings.
Termite control is expensive, so it is important to be sure of the identification. You can bring samples to your local Extension office. If the insects are identified as termite swarmers, there is plenty of time to investigate control options and get bids from several exterminators.
