Can mulch contribute to termite problems?

Excessive or improper use of landscape mulch can contribute to termite problems. Termites are attracted to mulch primarily because it retains moisture and insulates against temperature extremes. Mulch is not a preferred food source, so the type used doesn't make much difference (cypress, pine bark, eucalyptus, etc.). In fact, crushed stone and pea gravel are comparable to wood mulch in attracting termites because both retain soil moisture. Mulch should be applied sparingly (2 to 3 inches is usually adequate) and should never be allowed to contact wood siding or framing of doors or windows.
