Are there special planting requirements for grafted dwarf apple trees?

All woody plants should be planted in a hole large enough to spread out the roots. They should be planted no deeper than they were grown in the nursery (look for the soil line on the rootstock). However, when planting grafted trees, care must be taken to keep the graft union above ground. If the union is below ground, the scion (upper trunk with foliage) may root and lose the unique characteristics of the rootstock. On young trees, the graft union is usually noticeable by a bend or kink in the trunk.
