Hummingbirds are attracted to plants that bloom profusely and provide nectar; these plants may also attract tiny insects. Though hummingbirds seem to prefer red flowers, they will visit those of other colors as well. Woody plants that attract hummingbirds include butterfly bush, trumpet vine, and summersweet (Clethra). In addition, the following perennial and annual flowers attract hummingbirds: bleeding heart, butterfly weed, beardtongue, day lily, bee balm, cardinal flower, coral bells, delphinium, foxglove, hollyhock, impatiens, nasturtium, salvia, spider flower, snapdragon, morning glory, petunia, flowering tobacco, and pinks (carnations).
