Do strawberries require winter protection?

Strawberries require winter protection. The best method is an application of straw mulch. In addition to weed control, mulching is necessary to provide winter protection for the plants. Apply straw that is free of weed seeds two to three inches deep over the plants. Mulch strawberries after they have been subjected to several sharp freezes in the low 30s or high 20s (degrees F) in fall. In zones 6 & 7, this is generally by December 1, but no later than December 15. Don't wait too late, since temperatures of 12 to 18 degrees F can injure plants and reduce bloom. The straw mulch will insulate the plants (especially the root system) from repeated freeze and thaw cycles that may heave plants from the ground.
