Turning a compost pile at fairly frequent intervals during the first 10 to 15 days will achieve approximately the same degree of biodegradation as making the same number of turns over a longer period. Greater aeration during the initial stages of decomposition intensifies the activity of the microbes, and subsequently reduces the time and space required for composting.
Ideally, you should turn the pile each time you add new organic matter. If you have a pile that is at maximum size and you do not intend to add more yard waste, turn the pile once every three days for five turns. This will initiate decompostion and the process will proceed without any further agitation. You will need to maintain the proper moisture levels (evenly moist, not wet). In about 3 months the materials should be completely composted.
