In order for the microbes (fungi and bacteria) that facilitate decomposition to function, you must maintain the ideal conditions. Refer to the chart below.

|Oxygen||greater than 5%, turn compost periodically to oxygenate|
|Moisture||40 - 60%, sprinkle in times of drought|
|Carbon : Nitrogen||30 : 1, use a mixture of green (leafy) and brown (stem) components|
|Temperature||90 - 140 degrees F|
Particle size is also critical. All materials should be cut or shredded to a size of 2 inches or less.
