In order for the microbes (fungi and bacteria) that facilitate decomposition to function, you must maintain the ideal conditions. Refer to the chart below.

| Carbon : Nitrogen | 30 : 1, use a mixture of green (leafy) and brown (stem) components |

Particle size is also critical. All materials should be cut or shredded to a size of 2 inches or less.
