What are the ideal conditions for composting?

Gardens & Landscapes October 19, 2011 Print Friendly and PDF

In order for the microbes (fungi and bacteria) that facilitate decomposition to function, you must maintain the ideal conditions.  Refer to the chart below.

 Ideal Compost Conditions
Oxygen  greater than 5%, turn compost periodically to oxygenate
Moisture  40 - 60%, sprinkle in times of drought
Carbon : Nitrogen  30 : 1, use a mixture of green (leafy) and brown (stem) components
 Temperature  90 - 140 degrees F

Particle size is also critical.  All materials should be cut or shredded to a size of 2 inches or less.
