Composting can be done in a pile, a bin, or a pit, depending upon what is convenient. To save space, hasten decomposition, and keep the yard looking neat, contain the compost pile in some type of structure. Ideally, the smallest size for a compost pile is 3 feet X 3 feet X 3 feet (1 cubic yard). This size allows for moisture retention and insulation of the pile against changes in the external environment. Very large piles become anaerobic (without oxygen) if not turned frequently.
