Finished compost is the result of a controlled chemical reaction involving microbes (fungi and bacteria) and yard waste. If the compost materials are handled properly, the pile should heat to about 140 degrees F and sustain that temperature for at least three days. If this occurs, the finished compost will be sterile - free of weed seeds, disease organisms, and insect pests.
