Artificial light can be used to supplement or replace natural sunlight. Cool-white fluorescent lamps, alone or in combination with warm-white fluorescent lamps, are the most economical and best all-purpose lamps. Typically, a fixture holding two 40-watt tubes is positioned approximately 12 inches above the plants. Most plants need 12 to 16 hours of artificial light per day for good growth. You may consider designing room lighting around your anticipated use of indoor plants.
