Is it OK to put snails in a water garden?

There is some debate over whether to include snails in a water garden. The Japanese black snails (Viviparis malleatus) may not help keep the water clean, although they do slowly eat away at algae. They are, however, fun to watch and they will not get out of the pool and damage any other plants in your garden.
