The last spring freeze can occur anytime from early April in the extreme west to early May in the mountain region in the extreme southeast; the first fall freeze is usually between mid and late October. During a 30 year period, fall frosts occurred at the earliest on October 2 and at the latest on November 14. These same records indicate the last spring frost occurred at the earliest on March 7 and at the latest on May 10. The average length of the freeze-free period varies from 166 days on the southeastern plateau to 210 near the lower Ohio River.
