Baits do work. However, they are perishable and must be used properly. Baits have been specifically designed to be a food for ants. The oily surface is extremely attractive and will be picked up by the ants. Once the bait container has been opened, the oil on the bait may become rancid. If the bait is stored in areas with gasoline or insecticides or is exposed to smoke, the bait can absorb those odors and become unattractive to hungry ants. Take care when storing bait and treat it as you would any animal food. For best results apply the bait between mid-April and mid-October. Apply the bait when the ants are looking for food, generally when temperatures are between 65 and 85 degrees. Additionally, putting the bait out at the right time of day and at the correct rate is critical. If the ants are not actively foraging, they will not pick up the bait. Find out if ants are foraging by placing a piece of hot dog or potato chip in your yard and check after 30-60 minutes.
