Why don't we use Mirex to kill fire ants anymore?

Mirex was an effective fire ant bait, but it contained an active ingredient that belongs to a group of chemicals that have mostly been banned from sale or use. The active ingredient, or its degradation (breakdown) products, accumulated in the environment and were potential carcinogens.
