Generally, fire ant control strategies depend on several factors:
- Size and use of the site
- Number of people and pets that use it
- How often the area is used
- Availability and expense of labor
- Control method preferences
On home lawns, fire ant populations can be reduced at any time. The problem is that reinfestation occurs, so control is an ongoing effort.
Individual mound treatment alone is usually most practical on small lawns with fewer than 20 mounds per acre. In large or frequently used areas, broadcasting a bait product or combining a broadcast treatment with individual mound treatments of troublesome mounds is usually the most practical and least expensive choice.
