Generally, control strategies depend upon such factors as the size and use of the site, how many people (and pets) use it, how often they use it, the availability and expense of labor, and control method preferences. On home lawns, fire ants can be reduced at any given time; the problem is that reinfestation occurs, so control involves an ongoing effort. Individual mound treatment alone is usually most practical on small lawns with fewer than 20 mounds per acre. In larger and frequently-used areas, broadcasting a bait product, or combining a broadcast treatment with individual mound treatments of troublesome mounds is usually the most practical and least expensive choice.
