How do I kill fire ants around water?

Fire ant baits are the safest products to use near water, such as ponds and wellheads, because of their relatively low toxicity and the small amounts used. Even so, it is best not to use baits if rain is imminent. Not only would the bait be rendered ineffective, but some of the material would get washed into the pond.

Contact insecticides, many of which are toxic to fish, should be avoided. Boiling water can be substituted for contact insecticides or baits, especially for mounds very close to ponds or wellheads. While not as effective, a couple of gallons of boiling water will eliminate a mound at least 60% of the time. The use of boiling water is dangerous. To avoid burns, use caution when pouring the boiling water.

When using a chemical to manage fire ants, check to make sure it can be used in the area you want to treat. Also read and follow all label instructions.
