How do I get turkeys to stop pecking at my car?

This is no joke. Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) do cause damage. It isn't a lot of damage, but enough to cause paint to chip.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of options.

1. Get a terrier-type dog to roam around and chase the turkeys. This will go a long way in spooking the turkeys. This technique won't work as well if there are trees for the turkeys to roost in.

2. Like songbirds that seasonally attack their reflection in exterior rear-view mirrors of vehicles, the bird sees its reflection, which stimulates territorial defense/mating competition behaviors. Avoid washing your car to help reduce the birds' ability to see their reflection. Is there an option of modifying your parking place or habits?

3. Using a protective car cover for the vehicle would solve the problem.

4. Contact your state’s wildlife agency and determine how to go about getting a depredation permit. Since turkeys are not a federally regulated species but is usually a hunted species managed by the state wildlife department, it is essential that you contact the state prior to any type of trapping or lethal control.
