It's usually a relatively simple task to mechanically "set" pocket gopher traps. This information can typically be found on the container. If not available, the ICWDM site referenced below is an excellent source of information on the overall approach to gopher control, but it provides instructions on only a few trap designs. The "trapset," i.e., the placement of the trap within the target animal's burrow system, can have a significant learning curve for any animal and for any trap. One sure way to help shorten the curve is to ask an experienced trapper. Other suggestions include Cooperative Extension fact sheets, Internet searches, and experimentation. There is no substitute for "thinking like" your target species, i.e., how will the gopher approach this trap, what might tip him off that the trap is there, how might the trap be better concealed? Be sure that you are familiar with the mechanics of your trap so that clearances are adequate to ensure free operation. Whatever you do, don't give up!
Remember to stake down your trap. Many a beginning gopher trapper has said goodbye to a trap because a trapped gopher has carried an unsecured Macabee trap down its hole.
