We have so many rabbits around here. I was thinking of getting a cat to keep the population down. Is this a good idea?

Housecats are not recommended for controlling rabbits due to their propensity to indiscriminately kill so many other kinds of wildlife. Free-roaming cats (Felis domesticus) also present a potential risk to their owners due to the transmission of disease through ticks.
