There are two types of blackberries - erect and semierect - and you can purchase thornless varieties of both types. Semierect blackberries must be supported on a strong trellis. A simple trellis is recommended for the erect type.

Recommended thornless erect varieties: Apache and Ouachita.

Thornless, semierect varieties: Hull Thornless (Eastern Kentucky only), Triple Crown, and Chester.
