You should purchase vigorous, one-year-old nursery grown fruit trees. These trees will establish themselves sooner, survive better, and can be shaped (pruned) with a minimum of cutting when compared to two- or three-year-old trees. Larger caliper one-year-old trees with large root systems tend to grow more vigorously, but are more expensive. Order plants from a reputable mail order company and order dwarf apples by the rootstock and variety.
