Grafting refers to various techniques of inserting a section of stem with leaf buds (the scion) into the stock (plant with roots). Grafting is done with dormant scions in the spring and can be done both before and after growth begins.

Many fruit trees, ornamental trees, and shrubs are reproduced by grafting in order to maintain specific plant or fruit characteristics. Grafting is an example of asexual reproduction.
