When talking about grafting, what is the rootstock?

The rootstock is that part of a plant which becomes the root system of a grafted or budded plant. Rootstocks are selected based on their dwarfing characteristics, adaptability to various soil types, resistance to insects and disease, and compatibility with the scion variety.
