Muskmelons are what people commonly call cantaloupes. Some members of the muskmelon group are characterized by having a rough warty rind, while others such as the snake melon or pomegranate (Queen Anne's pocket melon) may be quite free of netting. Muskmelons may have a musky odor, while other members of this group may not. They are a warm-season crop and require a relatively long growing season of 80 to 100 days from seed to marketable fruit. Some cultivars are not well suited to small gardens because of the space required for growing the large vines. Cantaloupes grow quite well on black plastic mulch, but require a spray program to control the cucumber beetle, which spreads the bacterial wilt disease that often kills the plants.
