Cantaloupes can be grown by setting transplants, or by direct-seeding. Rows should be 5 feet apart with hills spaced 2 to 3 feet apart in the rows. Plant 2 or 3 seeds per hill. The seed should be placed 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep after danger of frost is past. To produce transplants, plant seed in individual containers three to four weeks before the plants are to be transplanted out-of-doors. Cantaloupes grown from transplants can be harvested as much as two weeks earler than those grown directly from seed. Be careful not to injure the roots of seedlings when transplanting cantaloupes. Use a starter fertilizer when setting the transplants. Cantaloupes should receive a nitrogen sidedressing when they begin to vine.
