Physical barriers can help protect plants from pests. Stiff collars placed at the soil line around young plants can help protect against cutworms, for example. Half a cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper also works well. Floating row covers, consisting of lightweight, fine-meshed fabric, can be loosely draped over crop rows and anchored to the soil at the edges to exclude insects. Metal screens or cold frames over gardens can exclude some insects, as well as birds and rabbits.
