There are many kinds of needle cast and needle blight diseases of pines and other conifers. Austrian, loblolly, mugo, pitch, red, Scots, shortleaf, Virginia, and white pines are susceptible to one or more needle diseases. Douglas fir and spruces are also susceptible to needle cast diseases. Conifers often shed infected needles (needle cast), resulting in defoliation.
