How do I grow a pecan tree from seed?

Last Updated: January 07, 2008

Pecan nut seeds are generally planted about two inches deep, soon after harvest in the fall. They do not germinate until late spring.

Seedling trees rarely produce a tree or nut that satisfies the individual that plants the seed. This is why most individuals plant a grafted tree or graft the seedling tree with a known variety.

Contact your local Extension office for variety recommendations.
