Mower blades can be professionally sharpened, or you can do it yourself. Any time you are working with the mower blade exposed, be sure to disconnect the spark plug from the mower. One of the easiest ways to sharpen the blade is to remove it from the mower, secure it in a vise, and sharpen it with a mill file using long strokes, keeping the angle consistent to avoid rounding of the blade. Grinding of the blade with an angle grinder or bench grinder is necessary only if there are nicks in the blade. Discard and replace any blades with cracks or large pieces missing. After the blade is sharpened, the blade should be balanced using a plastic balancer available at most hardware stores.
