How do I control Canadian thistle?

If you are not dealing with an extensive thistle problem, the best way to control this weed is to physically remove the plants by digging them up with a small shovel or trowel. It is important to remove as much of the canopy and taproot as possible. Maintaining a healthy, dense lawn will help to prevent the weeds from coming back. In hardiness zones 6 & 7, if chemical control is necessary, use a broadleaf-specific herbicide applied from September to early November or March to May. Contact your local Extension office for herbicide recommendations.
