Aerification, core cultivation, or coring is the physical removal of cores from the surface 2 to 3 inches of soil and redistributing them on the surface. Coring aids in relieving compaction, increasing water and air infiltration, and reducing thatch. It is most effective on high traffic areas such as athletic fields. It can be useful for home lawns on high traffic areas or on steep slopes to aid in water infiltration, but is often unnecessary.
