Seed blends have been recommended in the past in an attempt to take advantage of the most desirable characteristics of several grass varieties. A mix with two or more grass species has been recommended also. The problem with this approach is that the two or more species compete with one another and can result in a mottled lawn. Over time, one of the species will typically dominate the other. Plant breeders have developed varieties of turfgrass with good drought tolerance, pest resistance, and aesthetic quality. A quality turf-type tall fescue alone will give excellent results. Because we now have state testing of every adapted species of grass, we can select the best varieties without needing a grass blend.
