If you over-apply or spill a herbicide you should immediately water the area thoroughly. If you do so quickly enough, you may be able to wash much of the herbicide off the turf and into the soil. If you are planning to seed the area in the next few months, you may need to apply an activated charcoal product to deactivate the herbicide. These are available in liquid and granular forms and should be thoroughly watered into the soil. You can also consider removing 3-4 inches of soil and replacing it with good topsoil. Depending on the amount of chemical spilled, it may take several months for microbial decomposition of the chemical.
