What is coated seed?

Some commonly available grass seed has a special coating to aid turf establishment. You may find seeds coated with fungicides for disease control, or fertilizers for proper nutrition of young seedlings. These coatings are typically associated with warm-season grasses and generally do not aid in the establishment of cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue. One consideration when deciding whether to use these products is that the seed coating can contribute substantially to the overall weight of individual seeds. If you are trying to seed an area at a recommended rate of seed per 1000 square feet, you may have to purchase twice as much of the coated seed to get the same seeding rate.
