What is scarified grass seed?

In order for seeds to germinate, water and gases must be able to penetrate the seed coat. Seeds that have hard, impermeable seed coats will not germinate as easily as seeds with a thinner, more permeable seed coat. Seed producers will often treat seeds, either chemically or by mechanical abrasion, to weaken this physical barrier. This process is known as scarification and results in greater seed germination than untreated seed.
