Can I sod directly over an existing lawn?

No. A properly prepared seedbed is a necessity whether you are seeding a lawn or laying sod. Sod applied over existing vegetation will have difficulty rooting and will be more likely to dry out and die than sod applied directly to soil. A newly sodded lawn is only as smooth as the surface beneath the sod, so it is important to start with a smooth surface.
