Do shade tolerant grasses really grow well in shade?

Last Updated: September 19, 2007

No grass species will grow well in heavy shade. Some species such as fine fescue and tall fescue are slightly more shade tolerant than others. Grass grown in shade will not have the density and recuperative ability of grass grown in full sun, so it is important to keep pets and people away from these areas. Always mow higher in shade and apply no more than one fall fertilization each year. If the source of the shade cannot be reduced, you may consider mulching the area and planting shade-loving ornamental plants.
