When alfalfa hay samples are sent for lab analysis, what causes variation from lab to lab?

The sampling variation is the main source of difference between samples. While only about one gram of sample is analyzed by the lab, differences in leaves and stems, the influence of weeds, and differences even within a field cannot be easily represented and vary with sampling technique. The lab variation is much less but can vary slightly when the test is performed by different labs.
