Can I feed my horse soybean hulls? (rye, cottonseed meal, citrus pulp, etc.?)

Most feedstuffs fed to other livestock are safe for horses. Soyhulls in the pelleted form are a good source of highly digestible fiber for horses and are slightly lower than oats in nutritional value. However, they are not very palatable to horses. Because of the palatability problem, I recommend that you limit soyhulls to about 50% of the diet and mix them with a sweet feed to ensure consumption. Remember that if you mix them with a balanced sweet feed, you are destroying the nutritional balance of the sweet feed. This should not be a serious problem for a mature horse at maintenance if you are feeding the mixture for a short time--for example, to meet the horse's energy needs during winter. Unpelleted soyhulls are not recommended because they are hard for most horse owners to handle and tend to blow around in the feeder.
