Many universities offer pre-vet programs to prepare undergraduates for vet school. The curriculum is science based, so someone interested in this career would need to do well in science courses. Internships at veterinary clinics during the summer months would also be invaluable and allow her to decide if she really is suited for this career. If she is interested in being an equine vet, she should learn as much about handling horses and horse behavior as she can. Contact the university in your state that offers a pre-vet program or go online to check on programs in other states. Discuss with officials at the school that interests you what steps your daughter should take before she goes to college in order to be as prepared as possible. Information on a youth program, 4-H Veterinary Science, is available at http://aevm.tamu.edu/4-h-veterinary-science/.
