How can I determine if my oak tree has oak wilt?

Because there are so many similar-looking problems on oak, the best method to determine if your tree has oak wilt is to submit a tissue sample to a plant diagnostic lab. Contact your county Extension office for instructions. The lab can culture the sample and determine if it is the oak wilt fungus. Visual symptoms often include leaves that turn a dull, bronzed brown at the tips and along the outer margins, with a sharp line separating discolored from normal green tissue. The discoloration progresses toward the leaf base and the
midrib. If oak wilt is present, the canopy may be thin and leaves will be falling rapidly. Contact your local Extension office for instructions on submitting plant samples to a diagnostic lab.
