There are numerous different ways to protect your animals against this strain of leptospirosis (lepto). Here is some information on Leptospira hardjo-bovis control to help you decide how to manage it in your herd. You can opt to implement one of the following options after consulting your veterinarian to determine what is the best plan for your situation.
1. "Mercedes" approach:
- Gather all one-year-old and up cattle, treat them with LA-200, and give them their primer dose of Spirovac.
- 4 to 6 weeks later gather again and give Spirovac booster.
- 12 months later and every 12 months thereafter give them a Spirovac booster.
- At weaning, give replacement heifers LA-200 and the primer dose of Spirovac.
- 4 to 6 weeks later give them a Spirovac booster.
- 12 months later and every 12 months thereafter give them a Spirovac booster.
2. "Cadillac" approach:
- Do all of above except do not administer LA-200 to the adult cattle.
3. "Chevy" approach:
- Gather yearling replacement heifers and first-calf heifers, treat them with LA-200, and administer Spirovac.
- 4 to 6 weeks later gather again and give Spirovac booster.
- 12 months later and every 12 months thereafter give them a Spirovac booster.
- At weaning, give replacement heifers LA-200 and the primer dose of Spirovac.
- 4 to 6 weeks later give them a Spirovac booster.
- 12 months later and every 12 months thereafter give them a Spirovac booster.
4. "Volkswagen" approach:
- At weaning, give replacement heifers LA-200 and the primer dose of Spirovac.
- 4 to 6 weeks later give them a Spirovac booster.
- 12 months later and every 12 months thereafter give them a Spirovac booster.
