What do I do if I can’t pay my mortgage?

Call or write to your lender as soon as possible, preferably before the payment due date. Clearly explain the situation and be prepared to provide financial information to document your situation. Lenders will often provide creative solutions to keep from having to foreclose on a house. For example, they may allow financially distressed homeowners to suspend payments or make smaller payments until their financial situation improves. The key is to contact lenders before you fall behind on payments.
