A federal law gives you the right to “opt out” of having some of your personal information shared with or sold to other companies. That is the good news. The bad news is that the burden is on you to notify your financial institution if you want to opt out. To exercise your rights, read all your billing statements and inserts for information on how to notify them. This could include filling out a form, calling a toll-free number, or responding to an e-mail address if you do business with them over the Internet. For more information, visit the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse Web site at: www.privacyrights.org. This site has more information on the federal laws that affect you, as well as addresses for major financial institutions across the country.
