What is the proper procedure for dealing with a cavity in a tree trunk?

Only loose, decayed wood should be removed from a tree cavity. Never scrape the cavity totally clean, as this will spread decay to sound wood. It is usually best to keep the cavity open so moisture can evaporate and insecticides can be applied, if necessary. In most cases, expandable urethane foam and concrete have little value and can increase the cost of tree removal, as well as pose a safety threat. No wound dressing or pruning paint is needed.
