Important factors to consider when planting a tree are the shape and size of the planting hole, planting medium, location and placement of the root ball, and use of mulch. The hole should have sloped sides and should be at least three times as wide as the root ball. The removed soil (backfill) is used to plant the tree. If amending the soil, use no more than 10 to 20 percent compost or organic matter by volume. Plant on a slightly elevated area or mound to assure better drainage during the root establishment period. The root ball should sit on undisturbed soil to prevent unwanted settling. Mulch the entire area to promote healthy root growth.
