What is the best way to stake a tree?

Parallel stakes installed vertically next to the trunk or using three guy wires are the two methods to stake a tree. The important guide to follow is to attach the support loosely around the trunk and no more than one-third the total height of the tree, measuring from the ground. This allows the trunk to move a little with the wind but not enough to shift in the planting hole.

Stakes should not be left on a tree more than one growing season. As the tree grows in girth, the guy wire can girdle a tree.
