Why do flower buds drop from my tropical Chinese hibiscus plants that I have potted on my deck?

Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) plants are sensitive to changes in soil moisture levels. Those planted in pots are especially prone to flower bud drop because it is so difficult to keep plants properly watered. Plants not getting enough water (even one time) will experience bud drop. As the plant grows larger in the pot, it requires more water. Repot into a larger container to help solve the problem.

Potted plants displace soil in pots with root growth, reducing moisture retention. It is necessary to repot at least annually. Select a pot wide enough to contain the root ball and deep enough that, when watering, the water does not spill out of the pot. Add soil in width; do not bury the plant deeper in soil. Check for adequate drainage and use coffee filter, paper towel, or stocking material over the holes to allow drainage but retain soil.
